Musical journeys across Europe
Vidor Nagy. Viola and friends in four live concerts

In quest of musical beauty, one should crisscross Europe to see how past generations dealt with  belleza, beauty, beauté and all such, even today, hotly debated concepts. Only such a search can give musical life a deeper meaning, and the quest is more important than the result, as the searcher comes closer to the thoughts and feelings which characterize a specific cultural tradition.

In the 18th and into the 19th century such an exploration was called “the Grand Tour” and was an obligatory part of the education of nobles and upper classes.

Violist Vidor Nagy has taken many such journeys since the beginning of his career to enrich his profession. Having displayed various facets of his proficiency in many recordings, CDs and DVDs, the present recordings of four intentionally programmatically planned live concerts are meant to make visible a sort of total overview of the musical horizon as it can be condensed from the chamber musical experience of his instrument, the viola.

This „grand tour“  is not only geograhically meant but is also a journey in time. It begins in the more entertaining late 18th century, in the age of “gallant music” and ends in 20th century.
At the conclusion of our „Grand Tour“ let us have our interpreter give us his final thoughts:
“A little more than just a dash of beautiful sound, please!” That is what Vidor Nagy demands of himself and his colleagues in order to convey that producing a  pretty noise, is not enough to really get inside a piece. Sometimes it may be an advantage to think about using a harsher sound, this could, perhaps, be a more successful method of entering the composed cosmos.
“Only a person’s inner beauty makes us happy, not the superficially beautified. We want to expose the nature of the music slumbering beneath!”
